About Shenandoah Historical Fencing

Our Mission

Our mission is to preserve and promote Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) by blending rigorous training and historical study with a welcoming community. We strive to make HEMA accessible to all, focusing on safety, skill development, and respect for both the art and each other.

Our Training Approach

At the heart of our training is the integration of historical research with practical martial arts. Each class includes dynamic drills, technique development, and controlled sparring to develop both foundational and advanced skills. From practicing guards and techniques rooted in historical traditions to applying those skills in dynamic and interactive training exercises, our training brings centuries-old techniques to life.

We believe learning is a shared experience. Whether you’re a seasoned fencer or a complete beginner, every member contributes to the group’s growth by sharing insights, asking questions, and exploring techniques together. Safety and camaraderie form the foundation of our classes, ensuring that everyone feels supported and empowered in their HEMA journey.

Values & Safety

Respect, safety, and continuous improvement guide everything we do. Respect means fostering a space where all members feel valued, no matter their skill level. Safety is our top priority, with strict protocols, appropriate gear, and a focus on controlled practices. Above all, we value the pursuit of learning—both from the wisdom of historical texts and from each other.
